*Our sum: the wagering multiple × what it applies to, for a NZ$100 first deposit (or the casino’s minimum, if higher) at each casino’s first-deposit match. Winnings from spins can add more. “Terms unclear” means our sources don’t give enough detail to do the sum. Terms checked 22 Oct 2026.

The short answer

A casino bonus is extra money or spins with conditions attached, and the conditions decide what it's worth. We list 11 offers open to players in New Zealand, checked on 22 Oct 2026, each with its wagering, max cash-out and expiry. Before you accept one, work out three things: how much you'd have to bet to withdraw it, the most you could cash out, and how long you have to do it. On a NZ$100 first deposit, the lowest betting needed to cash out a bonus we list is NZ$4,000, at 7 of the casinos we list. None of these casinos holds a New Zealand licence yet.

Types of casino bonus

  • Welcome deposit bonus. The casino adds a percentage of your first deposit as bonus money, for example 100% up to NZ$100. You must bet it a set number of times before it becomes cash.
  • Bonus spins with a deposit. Spins on a named slot, given when you deposit. Each spin has a fixed stake, and winnings usually carry wagering.
  • No-deposit bonus. A small amount of bonus money or a set of free spins you get without depositing. These are uncommon, small, and usually come with tight caps on what you can cash out.
  • Cashback. A share of your losses returned over a period, often as bonus money with its own wagering.
  • Reload bonus. A deposit bonus for existing players, with the same kinds of terms.

Wagering: a worked example in New Zealand dollars

Wagering is how much you must bet before bonus money becomes cash you can withdraw. Here is a NZ$20 deposit bonus worked through. The figures are an example, not any casino's offer.

StepExample
You depositNZ$20
100% match bonusNZ$20 bonus, so a NZ$40 balance
Wagering of 35x the bonus35 × NZ$20 = NZ$700 in bets
Wagering of 35x the deposit plus bonus35 × NZ$40 = NZ$1,400 in bets
Average cost of NZ$700 in bets on a slot with 96% RTP4% of NZ$700 = NZ$28

On average, betting NZ$700 on a game that returns 96% costs about NZ$28, more than the NZ$20 bonus. That's an average over a very large number of bets, and any single session can go better or worse. If the 35x applies to deposit plus bonus, you'd need NZ$1,400 in bets and the average cost doubles to about NZ$56. Table games often count for less than slots towards wagering, so check the contribution rates.

How to compare two bonuses

A bigger headline isn't always better value. Here are two made-up offers, each taken with a NZ$50 deposit, compared on what the wagering would cost on average at a slot returning 96%.

Offer AOffer B
Headline100% up to NZ$10050% up to NZ$50
Bonus on a NZ$50 depositNZ$50NZ$25
Wagering40x the bonus = NZ$2,00010x the bonus = NZ$250
Average cost of that wagering4% of NZ$2,000 = NZ$804% of NZ$250 = NZ$10
Bonus left after the average costNothing: the cost is bigger than the bonusNZ$15

Offer A looks twice as generous, but on average its wagering costs more than the bonus is worth. Offer B is smaller and far easier to clear. These are averages, and real sessions vary a lot.

Max cash-out, max bet and expiry

  • Max cash-out. Many bonuses cap what you can withdraw from bonus winnings, for example at NZ$100. Anything above the cap is removed when you withdraw.
  • Max bet while wagering. Bonuses usually limit your stake per spin or hand while the bonus is active, for example to NZ$5. Bigger bets can void the bonus and its winnings.
  • Expiry. Bonuses and spins have deadlines. Spins can expire within a day or two of being credited, and wagering often has to be finished within a set number of days.
  • Excluded methods and games. Some offers exclude deposits made with certain methods, and some games don't count towards wagering at all.

What free spins and bonus spins are really worth

The value of a batch of spins is the number of spins multiplied by the stake per spin. That's what you would pay to play the same spins yourself.

OfferValue
50 spins at NZ$0.1050 × NZ$0.10 = NZ$5
20 spins at NZ$0.2020 × NZ$0.20 = NZ$4
100 spins at NZ$0.10100 × NZ$0.10 = NZ$10

Winnings from spins are usually bonus money with wagering. NZ$4 of spin winnings with 40x wagering means NZ$160 in bets, which costs about NZ$6.40 on average at 96% RTP. Spins you get without a deposit cost you nothing to try; spins given for a deposit are part of what you paid for, so we call them bonus spins.

Terms that often catch people out

  • Withdrawing cancels the bonus. Asking for a payout before wagering is finished usually removes the bonus and anything won with it.
  • One offer per person or household. Opening a second account to claim an offer again can get both closed and winnings held back.
  • Wagering on winnings, not the stake. With spins, the wagering usually applies to what you win, and it starts only once the spins are played.
  • Bonus money is used last, or first. Terms differ on whether your own cash or the bonus is spent first, which affects what you can withdraw if you stop early.

When to say no to a bonus

You don't have to take a bonus. Decline it if you want quick access to any winnings, if you can't realistically finish the wagering in time, or if you're depositing to win back a loss. Playing with your own cash keeps things simple: whatever is left is yours to withdraw. If bonuses keep pulling you back, set a deposit limit or call the Gambling Care helpline on 1800 936 725, open 24 hours a day.

Questions people ask

What is the best casino bonus in New Zealand?

The one with terms you can realistically meet. Compare the wagering multiple, whether it applies to the bonus or the deposit plus bonus, the max cash-out and the expiry. A smaller bonus with low wagering can be worth more than a large one with heavy conditions. Our table shows those terms side by side for each offer.

What does 35x wagering mean?

It means you must bet 35 times the bonus amount, or the deposit plus bonus if the terms say so, before you can withdraw it. A NZ$20 bonus at 35x means NZ$700 in bets. At a slot returning 96% on average, that much betting costs about NZ$28, so check the sums before you accept.

Are no-deposit bonuses real?

Yes, but they're uncommon and small. A no-deposit offer is usually a set of free spins or a few dollars of bonus money, with wagering, a short expiry and a low cap on what you can withdraw. You'll still need to verify your ID before any withdrawal. Read the max cash-out before you get excited about the headline.

Can I withdraw a casino bonus straight away?

No. Bonus money has to be wagered first, and asking to withdraw while a bonus is active usually cancels the bonus and any winnings from it. Your own deposited money is different: if you haven't taken a bonus, you can normally withdraw it, subject to the casino's minimum withdrawal and ID checks.

What is max cash-out?

It's the most you can withdraw from bonus winnings. If an offer has a NZ$100 max cash-out and you turn the bonus into NZ$300, only NZ$100 can be withdrawn and the rest is removed. It often applies to no-deposit offers and to winnings from spins. Check it in the offer terms before you play.

Do I have to take a welcome bonus?

No. You can decline a welcome bonus at sign-up or in the cashier, so you can withdraw winnings without wagering. If you've accepted one by mistake, ask support whether it can be removed before you start playing. Removing it later can cancel any winnings from it.
